Kimi Ga Nozumo Eien (the eternity that you wish for)
Summary: While in high school, Haruka and Mitsuki are best of friends. they even share a love interest in their classmate Takayuki. Egged on by Mitsuki, Haruka was the first to confess her feelings. However, one day Haruka has an accident that almost claimed her life. Although the doctors managed to save her, she couldn't get out of her coma. Takayuki fell into a deep depression, and Mitsuki, at that time, decides to confess her love for Takayuki, as she thought Haruka couldn't be saved, and she wanted to get Takayuki out of his depression. The two establish a relationship, and it seems not long before they will get married. however, all this will change when Haruka wakes up one day...
Storyline: Wow. just... wow. Personally, I'm a sucker for drama or romantic-themed shows, but this just blows. it can get rather confusing, especially if you miss one or two episodes like I did... I should elaborate a bit more. although the setting is a high school romance, the story of this show actually takes place in thier adult life, which changes the scenario quite a lot. Gone are the goofiness and innocence of youth, gone are the carefree, devil-may-care attitudes. these characters are really practical adults, with daily needs. and they flesh out the story well, with side characters for contrast, and flashbacks referring to periods in their high school, where the bulk of the romance was supposed to take place.
Music: wheeew... the lack of music during the episode itself cuts a point, but other than that it's pretty good! the opening theme and ending themes are a must to get, although understanding them is a different thing heh =P a good, catchy tune for opening, and a solemn ending one. Hell, they got a waltz!
Characters: The characters are really developed and fleshed out, for an anime up to about 20 episodes only. you really get an insight into their though processes, and the viewpoint that the show takes you through, experienceing the pain and trouble of each character is quite a novel experience. Those of you who tear easily, get tissues ready because you WILL tear at their plight. The valiant efforts of Takayuki, Haruka and Akane (Mitsuki's sister) keeping the reality of life away from Haruka, making her think she passed out only for a few weeks when in fact 3 years has passed, and the pain of losing a loved one, of making a choice between the two. you will feel it all. and it hurts. even the two dorky mischievious waitresses (minor characters), seemingly added in just for comedic relief, add to the story in their own way, when they later reflect the dire distress a main character.
Conclusion: when i did a little reading up, i was acutally quite surprised that this was adpated from a dating sim. animes adapted from dating sims aren't a new phenomenon, but they rarely turn out well (if you have something like To Heart you'll know what I'm talking about). this one seems to have been missed though, a definite must-get. i'd say ages 12 and up at LEAST, because it does involve a certain philosophical depth that younger viewers may not understand. and don't skip episodes. you'll usually miss out a major storyline plot and have trouble following the rest of the series. if you're a fan of drama, definitely get this one. if you want comedy or action, sorry, you'll probably want to skip this one.
